It appears homeless numbers in the Midwest have bucked the national trend.

The latest Department of Housing figures show a reduction in the number of adults without a permanent home across Clare and Limerick from 412 in March, to 405 in April.

More than half of those were aged between 25 and 44, with 11 over the age of 65.

There were 92 families, including 151 children in emergency accommodation in hotels, B&Bs or hostels in the Midwest.

In Clare, the number of people seeking homeless services fell by three across the month.

Overall, there were 12,259 people registered as homeless in Ireland; the first time the figure has ever gone above 12,000.

The figure doesn’t include asylum seekers, refugees, women in refuge centres and the so-called hidden homeless.
