Hopes Bail Laws Will Cut Crime Rates

It's hoped new legislation will provide greater protection to the public, and cut the number of crimes committed by offenders out on bail.

The Bail Bill is due to be published by the Minister for Justice when the Oireachtas reconvenes this autumn.

It will give District Courts power to refuse bail regardless of whether an appeal is made against a prison sentence and in some cases hear evidence from victims before a decision on bail is taken.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway, his party's Seanad Justice Spokesman, hopes it'll make a difference.
