HIQA Criticises Clare Nursing Home

A South-East Clare nursing home has been criticised by the health watchdog, after its inspectors found staff were unable to account for missing psychotropic drugs.

Inspectors expressed "significant concern" that nursing staff at Athlunkard House Nursing Home were unable to document when, or to whom, the potent medications were used.

The Irish Times outlines how experts feel these medications should only be used as a last resort, but that they are often relied upon to control disruptive or challenging behaviour in patients.

An action plan was issued following the unannounced inspection, which occurred in April, and HIQA says this was responded to in a "timely and comprehensive manner."
