65 people have now died here as a result of the virus, at least nineteen of them since the start of the year.

These deaths are of people who died due to COVID-19, or after they were diagnosed with the virus.

In all of 2020, the CSO says no more than six of these deaths were recorded in Clare on any given week.

On the week finishing January 15th, seven such deaths were registered and today it has been confirmed that another grim milestone has been reached, with eleven more COVID-19 related deaths in this county.

It means that at least 19 people have died here as a result of the virus in 2021, and brings Clare’s death toll since the start of the pandemic to 65.

The median age of those who died is 82 years old.

Another milestone has also been breached, with 4,079 COVID cases confirmed up to last Friday, although the total case numbers last week was the lowest recorded in a month.

There was also a fall in the number of cases linked to outbreaks – down to seven – further suggesting that efforts to suppress the virus in the community have been effective.
