Green Light For New Penneys Store In Ennis

Primark has been given the green light to build its new Penney’s store in Ennis.

The proposed three-storey retail unit and public walkway are also tipped to satisfy the riverside development objective of the Ennis 2040 strategy.

Primark LTD, the parent company of Penneys, has now officially been granted planning permission to construct a new flagship three-storey retail outlet on Harmony Row.

The proposed over 3,500 square metre development will require the demolition of an existing fire damaged and derelict house while a new public riverside walkway connecting Bank Place to Harmony Row has also been approved.

A retail assessment report by MKO Consultants meanwhile says the store would have the potential to become a catalyst for inward investment into the local economy and that the outlet itself could generate income of over €14.2m by 2029.

There were a number of concerns raised with the plans, primarily relating to traffic safety and the need for a new pedestrian crossing between the proposed store and the Coláiste Muire Secondary School.

There was just one objection however, coming from Ballyvaughan Ceramacist Jackie Maurer, who stated the store would be misaligned with the Ennis 2040 vision and that fast fashion typically diverts funds away from independent retailers.

Ms Maurer also claimed the development would pose a significant threat to the biodiversity and heritage of the area due to the loss of green spaces and biodiversity.

Clare County Council has granted permission subject to 14 conditions.
