Govt. urged to subside hurley makers due to Dieback Disease

The government has been urged to subsidise Clare hurley makers to off-set extra costs caused by the ash dieback disease.

The disease has threatened ash populations across Europe, and has now been discovered at a number of sites nationwide including Galway and Tipperary.

New legislation has been introduced to try and ensure the disease does not enter the country through imported ash supplies, but it’s now feared the extra cost incurred could push up the price of ash products, most notably hurls.

Around a quarter of all hurleys are made in Clare, and Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara has called for measures to ensure their cost does not sky rocket.
