The Department of Transport has acknowledged “deterioration” on rural roads in Clare and is urging Clare County Council to keep a closer eye on opportunities for improvement.
Speaking in the Dáil, Bodyke Fine Gael Deputy Joe Cooney has questioned why the installation of cat’s eyes is compulsory on national primary and secondary routes but not on local and regional roads.
Responding to Deputy Cooney, Fine Gael Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jerry Buttimer, has stated the selection of roads for the placement of studs is the local authority’s responsibility.
He says road safety issues arising from areas being unlit are a matter of concern to the Government.
