Government Forced To Defend Justice Minister

The Social Protection Minister has insisted that the government has full confidence in the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter.

Fianna Fáil says the Minister has known – for two years – about serious flaws in the Garda handling of individual murder, abuse and abduction cases, but failed to act. This includes claims of malpractice into the investigation of the murder of Sixmilebridge woman Sylvia Roche Kelly, who was killed in Limerick's Clarion Hotel in December 2007.

However, Minister Joan Burton has insisted that Alan Shatter retains the confidence of the cabinet colleagues.

Fianna Fáil said his decision is untenable, while nine Independent TDs have called on Alan Shatter to resign.
