It comes following the party's dismal performance in the Local and European Elections.

The Labour Party failed to win any seats in Clare's local elections and has only taken 50 seats across the country.

A number of party members have expressed their discontent with the party's role in Government with Clare's Labour TD calling on Eamon Gilmore and his front bench to resign when he spoke to John Cooke on Clare FM's Morning Focus.

Deputy Michael McNamara said it's matter of trying to "save the party" and not a personal reflection on Mr Gilmore, who he described as a "decent person".

Speaking in Dublin this afternoon, Eamon Gilmore said he will remain on as party leader until his successor is chosen, and plans to continue his own political career.
