The operation targeting criminal gangs started at 7am this morning.

80 Gardaí mainly from the Pearse St and Kevin St garda stations began searches with support from the drugs and organised crime bureau, special detective unit and the criminal assets bureau.

The gang Gardaí were targeting has connections with David Byrne, the man murdered at the Regency Hotel last month.

Similar raids were carried out in the Crumlin area of Dublin on Wednesday when Gardaí seized luxury cars and tens of thousands of euro in cash.

Reporter with the Herald Conor Feehan says it shows Gardaí are clamping down on drugs gangs in the city.

Gardaí arrived at 10 residential properties this morning.

These were in the Pearse Street and Kevin Street areas as well as raids in Dublin 8.

They had equipment needed to force entry to the properties, however in most cases it wasn't needed.

They've seized evidence from a number of homes.

Michael O'Toole, Crime Correspondent with The Irish Daily Star, says the crackdown could drive up the price of drugs.

One man was arrested this morning in the course of the operation.

It's believed however that this was because of an outstanding order, and that the arrest is not directly linked to the raids.

It's the second high profile operation against criminal gangs in the last week, and it's likely there could be more in the coming months.
