Funeral Of Westmeath Couple Hears Violence Of Terrorism Has Invaded Athlone

The funeral of a Westmeath couple murdered in last week’s Tunisian beach shootings has heard that the violence of terrorism has 'invaded' Athlone.

Laurence and Martina Hayes were holidaying in the resort of Sousse when they were among 38 people killed by an Islamic State gunman.

Hundreds of people attended the couple's funeral mass – including aides de camp for the President and Taoiseach as well as the Transport Minister.

Chief Celebrant Canon Liam Devine says the town has been rocked by evil fanaticism.
