French Court decision due on topless pictures

A judge in France will announce his decision this morning on whether topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge can continue to be published.

Lawyers for Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared in court in Paris yesterday seeking an injunction.
 
Meanwhile, the editor of the Irish Daily Star, Michael O’Kane was last night suspended – as the Independent Star Limited carries out its own investigation into the circumstances behind the newspaper’s decision to print the pictures.

The controversy has prompted the Justice Minister to re-examine whether we should introduce privacy legislation here.

Alan Shatter says there will have to be a balanced law that protects freedom of the press but also allows an individual’s right to privacy.

But Secretary of the National Union of Journalists, Seamus Dooley, says it would be a knee-jerk reaction.
