Former Clare INTO President Says Rural Development Needed To Save Schools

A Clare-based former president of the country’s largest teachers union says a shift in focus is needed to ensure rural schools in this county continue to survive.

The Department of Education predicts the number of children attending primary school is set to drop by 20 per cent over the next 15 years, with the INTO warning rural schools need to be protected if numbers drop.

While primary school numbers are going down, it’s predicted secondary school numbers will rise sharply for the next few years at least.
