Former Clare Councillor Wary Of Calls To End Publicising Local Representatives’ Addresses

A former Clare councillor is wary about calls to change the law which requires local representatives to list their address publicly at election time.

It follows a spike in reported threats and alleged assaults against politicians at local and national level.

Under current legislation, candidates must list an address on election campaign material – meaning those not affiliated with a political party are most likely using their home address.

A similar law was overturned in the North in 2020, but former Shannon councillor Patricia McCarthy, feels to do so here would alienate constituents from their local councillor.
