Family Of Sylvester Barrett Deny Tax Evasion Links

The family of a former Clare Fianna Fáil Minister and TD have denied that he held bank accounts linked with tax evasion.

Using Dáil privilege yesterday, Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald named a number of former politicians who she claimed are named on a dossier given to TDs by a civil servant whistleblower.

One was 'S Barrett' – the family of Sylvester Barrett have denied claims that he had bank accounts with either Guinness & Mahon or Ansbacher.

The late Mr. Barrett who lived in Clarecastle for most of his life, served as a TD from 1969 until 1984 and was a former Environment and Defence Minister.

He passed away in 2002.

Separately this morning, Mary Harney has denied claims that she cancelled an internal investigation into tax evasion, just because it had raised allegations against one of her party colleagues.

The former Progressive Democrats leader says she's happy with how she handled the internal investigation – and denied allegations made in the Dáil yesterday.
