The Environmental Protection Agency has observed a significant improvement in Clare County Council’s environmental performance.
Despite being ranked above just four counties, the local authority has been found to have met a “strong” or “excellent” standard in 11 of 15 categories.
The EPA’s Local Authority Environmental Enforcement Report 2025 assesses county and city councils against 15 criteria which it calls national enforcement priorities or NEPs.
In the 2024 report, for which local authorities were measured against 19 NEPs, Clare County Council was found to have been “strong” or “excellent” in just 11, giving it a score of 58%, with just three councils performing worse.
In the latest report, which looks at local authorities’ performance in 2025, Clare’s score has risen to 73%, with the council deemed “excellent” in three areas, “strong” in eight and “moderate” in four.
A total of four counties were found to have performed to a lower standard than Clare County Council, namely Kilkenny, Laois, Sligo and Leitrim.
