Ennis Residents Uphappy With New Road Layout

Residents in Ennis claim a new road layout could lead to someone becoming seriously injured.

The road width on the Cloughleigh Road has been reduced as part of works for the West Clare Railway Greenway and with old road markings left there for a number of days, concerns have been raised that someone will be involved in an accident.

Residents in Ennis are up in arms after the Cloughleigh Road was almost cut in half to introduce a new padestrian and cycle lane.

Contractors acting on behalf of Clare County Council made the changes as part of Phase 1 of works on the West Clare Railway Greenway but the old road markings have been left in place for a number of days.

This has led to anger among some residents who say there has been a number of near-misses in the area.

Tony O'Donoghue, who lives in the area has described it as a death trap.

The West Clare Railway Greenway is a 42km cycling and walking route linking Ennis and Lahinch via Corofin and Ennistymon along the route of the dismantled west Clare railway.

Mayor of Ennis Pat Daly says its an exciting project but believes the lane that has been put in place in Cloughleigh is unnecessary.

Clare County council says "A priority system for traffic on the road in question is in operation" and that the "lining scheme will shortly be completed by the contractor". It's understood that work will be carried out later today.
