Ennis Is Now A University Town As TUS Opens Its Doors

It’s hoped the establishment of Ennis as a university town will have significant ecomoic benefits for the entire county.

Ireland’s newest technological university formally opens today in the midlands and midwest.

Technological University of the Shannon will have over 14 thousand students across six campuses in Athlone, Limerick, Clonmel, Ennis and Thurles.

It’s the third technological university to be set up in this country and will be officially launched at an opening ceremony at the Athlone Campus today.

In what’s been described as a monumental day, Ennis has finally become a University town.

It follows the establishment of Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, which is the latest to be formed in Ireland.

TUS promises to be a new powerhouse university, driving development and investment across the Midwest and Midlands and will comprise a student population of more than 14,000 and a staff complement of around 1,200 people.

They’ll be based at six campuses in Ennis, Limerick, Athlone, Clonmel and Thurles.

President of TUS, Professor Vincent Cunnane says new areas of study will be created and the ability to interact with industry, business, social and cultural communities will be enhanced.

The establishement of Ennis as a university town promises to bring signignificant economic benefits.

Vice President of Academic Affairs and Registrar, Ennis woman Marian Duggan is hopeful that more industry will be attracted by the town’s new status.

Prior to the pandemic Ennis Chamber established a focus group from different sectors within its membership across the county to examine the skills need in the county.

CEO Margaret O’Brien says she’s looking forward to reforming that group and working together with TUS to ensure that there is a varied skillforce here to attract investment.
