Ennis Labour Candidate Calling For Good Friday To Paid Public Holiday

An Ennis Labour party candidate is calling on the government to recognise Good Friday as a paid public holiday.

Today is not an official public holiday but some employers treat the day as an optional day off, though most private sector workers, particularly in industries like retail, tourism, and hospitality are denied this paid benefit.

Ireland currently has only 10 bank holidays, which is substantially lower than the world’s highest; Nepal at 35 days and the European Union’s highest; Austria at 12 days.
