Ennis Economist Claims ECB Interest Rate Hike Will Pressurise Government Into Response

A Clare economist claims another European Central Bank Interest rate increase will put pressure on the Government to react ahead of Budget 2027.

The European Central Bank is expected to announced further increase in the coming weeks, with households already facing rising costs of fuel, food and electricity.

Ireland’s inflation rate is currently 3.4% which is above the Eurozone rate of 3%, and the ECB’s desired target rate of 2%.

Ennis economist and Assistant Professor of Social Policy at UCD, Micheál Collins, says increasing interest rates is an attempt to stabilise the rising cost of living ahead of winter.
