As many as ten animals had been reported loose on a badly-lit section of the old Limerick to Galway road last evening.

It’s understood that around half past five, a car travelling in the direction of Ennis, collided with two horses, killing one and leaving the other seriously injured on the road.

The second was too badly hurt to be saved, and a vet had to be called.

Locals and passing motorists ran to help the woman and emergency services were alerted.

Units from Clare County Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance and a number of Garda patrols attended the incident.

The female driver of the car and her child were subsequently taken by ambulance to hospital as a precaution.

A Garda investigation into the incident has been launched and efforts are now underway to identify the owner of the horses.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information about who might own the horses are urged to contact Ennis Garda station on 065 68 48 100.
