Up to 17,000 school teachers will begin industrial action today.
ASTI members at around 500 second-level schools will not attend meetings outside of school hours, and won’t take on additional duties without pay.
They may also opt out of covering for colleagues absent on school business and won’t participate in training for the new Junior Cert.
Union members have been warned that they face expulsion from the ASTI or fines if they do not participate in action.
They’ve also been told that they can’t switch unions to avoid being part of the dispute with the government over pay following the rejection of the Haddington Road Agreement.
Meanwhile, a protest against overcrowded classes in the countries primary schools will take place in Dublin today.
The demonstration by the Irish National Teachers Organisation is being organised to urge the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn to protect primary education in the upcoming budget.
Members of the INTO union along with parents and teachers will address today’s rally at the Department of Education offices.
