Closure Of Molex In Shannon Described As “Devastating” For Clare

The closure of Molex’s Shannon facility has been described as a “devastating blow” for the county.

Management at the electronics solutions company broke the news to the 500 workers there in a meeting yesterday afternoon, blaming the move on a review of its product lines manufactured at the Shannon facility.

It’s expected to fully close by the end of next year, while Molex has said that the Shannon workers will be supported in the transition ahead.

CEO of Shannon Chamber Helen Downes says the announcement has come as a shock to everyone.

Last evening, both Ministers in the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation – Heather Humphreys and and Pat Breen – expressed disappointment at the Molex announcement.

They’re both due in Shannon later for a meeting with management at the plant.

Deputy Joe Carey and Deputy Michael Harty have both called for a taskforce to alleviate the devastating impact of the job losses, while Timmy Dooley has equated the level of this loss of 500 jobs to Clare as akin to 10,000 jobs in Dublin.
