The Minister for Communications has opened the door for government supports for workers affected by the scaling back of operations at Moneypoint Power Station.
Minister Richard Bruton has urged local stakeholders to come together to make the case for supports under a carbon tax-funded Just Transition Fund model, similar to that announced for the Midlands in last week’s Budget.
There, local authorities, and local arms of the IDA and Enterprise Ireland had pressed the case for the midlands to offset the impact of a winding down of peat production.
In Clare, around 100 staff and more contractors who’ve worked at the coal-powered Moneypoint plant are facing a loss of employment and, responding to Fianna Fáil’s Timmy Dooley, Minister Richard Bruton acknowledged specialist funding for the area could be needed.
