The Shannon Town Centre Masterplan was adopted by Clare County Councillors last January and followed 18 months of significant public consultation, where a range of stakeholders fed into the process.

The genesis of the plan was a URDF application, which was part-funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under Project Ireland 2040.

The masterplan sets out a strategic framework to guide the development of Shannon town centre over the next 10 to 15 years.

It includes plans for an innovation campus, a one-Shannon hub, an improved main street, the creation of a new town square and a mixed use of residential and commercial units in the town centre.

Clare County Council says the identification of specific interventions that can be implemented over coming months and years are key to the plan and that the focus now is to implement them in conjunction with local stakeholders.

Senior Planner Brian McCarthy says the local authority will progress the design phase as quickly as possible.

The Love Shannon Community Council insists that this plan must be the last one, after the previous two masterplans failed to come to fruition.

Chairperson Derek Clune says Shannon Town is crying out for investment and locals will keep the issue at the top of the agenda.

He’s calling on all stakeholders to come together to ensure it’s implemented.
