Still No Clarity On ESB’s Future Plans For Moneypoint

There’s still no clarity on the ESB’s future plans for Moneypoint Power Station.

Minister for Communications Richard Bruton has been asked for a list of options on the future of the plant after 2025, by which date it’s due to cease burning coal.

Repeating information that has already in the public domain, the Minister has told the Dáil in a written answer that a range of technologies are being considered, including biomass, combined cycle gas, gas peaking plants, offshore wind, electricity storage or a combination of these.

Deputy Michael Harty, who asked the question of the Minister, has expressed frustration at the lack of clarity and has questioned whether the “ESB has really any significant interest in Moneypoint after coal burning ceases.”
