On October 10th, Jason Moloney, submitted an application to Clare County Council to develop a serviced touring caravan and glamping site in Kilkee.

Planning was sought to accommodate 23 caravans and 4 glamping pods on the site in Dough, with the submission also including plans for a permanent structure to act as a facilities building.

Objections were lodged by members of the public and by Kilkee Councillor Cillian Murphy in relation to concerns varying from pressure on the local road network and sewerage system to the possibility of anti-social behaviour.

A road safety audit compiled by Bruton Consulting Engineers was included in the application.

The audit identified five problems in relation to road safety, including the risk of side-swipe collisions between passing caravans on a section of the Bog Road.

The audit did however, provide potential solutions to the issues cited.

Despite this, the local authority refused permission for the development, saying that the road network that serves as access to the site from the Circular Road is deficient in width and pedestrian provision in order to cater for the demand the site would generate.

The Planning Authority ruled that a camping site would have an adverse impact on traffic safety locally.
