Both ESB and the Shannon Airport Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the development of a hydrogen lighthouse project in the environment surrounding the airport.

It follows the airport’s launch of its new Sustainability Strategy and commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 50 percent.

The project includes hydrogen refuelling and battery electric vehicle charging in a single location, which would be one of the first of its kind in Ireland.

Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine says the move shows the Group’s desire to ‘invest in smart and innovative infrastructure’, with hydrogen set to play a key role in decarbonising the transport sector.

Executive Director, Generation and Trading at ESB, Jim Dollard, has said in a statement collaborations such as this are ‘critical’ for the future of the transport industry.

Both organisations will now get to work on concept developments for the lighthouse project – such as design and site identification.
