Only two years ago, Ennis was celebrated as the cleanest town in Ireland in the rankings of 40 towns and cities, but in 2018 it fell in dramatic fashion to 22nd spot.

In the final survey of 2019, the county town has rebounded to 8th place, however, and has once again been classified as ‘Cleaner Than European Norms’.

The An Taisce Report, commissioned by IBAL, says the town had no heavily littered sites and is notable for the many attractive historical signs and information, like O’Connell monument, Mill Bridge and Market Place.

It went on to say that there was evidence of a tie-in with the Tidy Towns in Ennis, with regard to façade painting along O’Connell Street and tree planting in Tim Smythe Park.

Some of the top ranking sites included O’Connell Street, which was exceptionally clean and well presented, and Tim Smythe Park which was an excellent site in terms of presentation, maintenance and litter.

While, Lower Market Street / Market Place was also noted for having “no major litter issues”.
