23% Increase In Older People Living Alone In Clare

There has been a 23%increase in people aged 65 and over living alone in Clare.

The CSO has published it’s latest profile of the Census results for Households, Families and Childcare.

There were 20,340 people aged 65 and over living in Clare in April 2022 with 5,566 of these people living alone.

This was a 23% increase in those aged 65 and over living alone in the last six years.

In total, the number of people living alone in the county grew from 11,108 to 11,920, an increase of 6% since Census 2016.

Also in Clare, 12,678 adults, or 13% of those aged 18 and over in the county, were still living with their parents, an increase of over 2,000 people since the previous Census.

In addition, 689 or 5% of these people were considered unpaid carers.

14% of all adults in the Shannon Local Electoral Area were living with their parents in April last year, the highest rate in the county.

Also in the report, there were 32,195 families in Clare, this included 14,812 married couples with children and 2,101 cohabiting couples with children.

There were also 141 same-sex couples living in Clare last year compared with just 86 in 2016.
