In the fourteen days up to the beginning of this week, Clare has seen a significant rise in Covid cases – with 195 new infections being recorded in that timeframe.

The spread of the disease has jumped by a quarter, with 156 cases recorded in the previous fortnight.

While the Shannon electoral area saw the most new cases with 60 new infections reported, Ennistymon saw the biggest increase with 15 more people testing positive compared to two weeks prior.

The Kilrush region is the only area that saw fewer people take ill with the virus, recording only 19 new cases.

In the first two weeks of this month, all areas in Clare recorded an incidence rate less than half the national average, but the most recent data shows both Shannon and Killaloe now have a rate of infection that is only almost 40% lower.

It comes as the national incidence rate per 100,000 of the population has risen to 344.2.
