At Ennis District Court, Judge Aeneas McCarthy convicted Roy Mounsey of Castlerock, Ennis of the assault causing harm of Garda Shane Flanagan at Mr Mounsey’s rented home in the early hours of May 31st 2015.

Roy Mounsey, who had no previous convictions before this case, had denied the charge of assault, in relation to the incident at his home on May 31st last year.

In evidence, Garda Flanagan, who is from Ennis and stationed in Gort, said he did not know Mounsey before the incident, and that he had gone back to his home with a female friend who did know him.

When at the house, Mounsey asked him to go out of the front door before the attack took place.  Garda Flanagan said Mounsey "snapped and got extremely aggressive", and that part of his upper lip "was ripped off" in the attack.

Mounsey insisted he had thrown one punch in self-defence but this was rejected by Inspector Tom Kennedy, who said the assault was at the upper end of Section 3 Offences Against the Person Act.

In convicting Mr Mounsey, Judge McCarthy said that the medical evidence shows a number of punches had been thrown, and that he found the facts proven in the case.

He remanded Mr Mounsey on continuing bail ahead of another court hearing in November.
