Michael D Higgins has been re-elected as President of Ireland.
He won on the first count getting more than 820,000 votes – 55.8 per cent of everyone who voted.

In County Clare Michael D Higgins received 22639 first preference votes, giving him 54.65% of the total valid poll of 41,422.
Peter Casey received 28.3%. Sean Gallagher had 5.52%, Liadh Ni Riada with 5.3%.
Joan Freeman received 4.75% while Gavin Duffy finished with 617 votes giving him just 1.5%.
Reacting to the election result, Fine Gael’s Deputy – Joe Carey said Michael D Higgins is a president the country can be proud of.
