Councillor Says Unaffordability Of Housing In Clare To Be Remembered As “National Scandal”

One of Clare’s local elected representatives says it’ll be seen as a “national scandal” in the years to come that working people in the county can’t afford a house at present.

Discussions at this week’s meeting of Clare’s Rural Development Strategic Policy Committee were dominated by housing following a presentation from the Housing Activation Unit on the steps being taken to boost supply in the county.

Clare County Council is aiming to build 167 social and affordable homes this year but claims it’s on course to deliver 232.

Corofin Fianna Fáil Councillor Joe Killeen, who sits on the Rural Development SPC, says successful governments’ housing policies have proven unsuccessful in recent years.
