Clare County Council is set to write to the Government to request that Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is officially recognised as a disability.
The HSE estimates that up to 7.5% of the population are living with the condition, which occurs when parental exposure to alcohol affects the developing brain and body of children in the womb.
The headquarters of FASD Ireland is based on O’Connell Street in Ennis and elected representatives will now receive a workshop so they can better inform constituents about the disorder and supports available.
Shannon Banks Sinn Féin Councillor James Ryan says the lack of disability status has become a barrier to clinical treatment.
