Clare County Council is to lodge a formal application for Ennis to be included in the Affordable Housing Scheme later this month.
It’s understood a separate similar proposal for Shannon is also being looked at, with those two areas of the county currently the only places eligible under the parameters set out by the Department of Housing.
The local authority’s received more than 500 expressions of interests for affordable accommodation in the county town since it launched a recent survey on the matter.
