Council Calls For Concealing The Face In The Course Of A Crime To Be Made An Offence

Clare County Council is to call on the government to make it an offence for an individual to cover their face in the course of a crime.

It follows a proposal put forward on the matter at this month’s meeting of the local authority in light of the scenes of riots and looting from shops in Dublin City last November.

Although it is illegal for a member of the public, to wear a balaclava issued to a member of An Garda Síochana, there is no law to prevent someone from concealing their face in public.

Clarecastle Councillor Tom O’Callaghan believes riots could spread to the county town and that this measure could discourage public disorder.
