Council accused of “scare tactics” to claw back unpaid monies

Clare County Council has been accused of frightening people into paying debts, by using a Dublin solicitors firm to chase unpaid building levies.

More concern has been raised though, about whether the debts actually exist, as some of the unpaid bills date back 10 years and may be lacking full documentation.

The council has confirmed that around 10,000 euro has been retrieved through 23 letters from the solicitors firm in question, and says they’ll investigate specific reports from councillors about constituents who felt threatened and abused by the letters.
