A convicted paedophile has been jailed for seven years after he was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting his niece in Clare over forty years ago.
The 81-year-old man denied two charges, but was found guilty by a Central Criminal Court jury last May of raping and indecently assaulting the child in August 1971.
The man, who cannot be named, was jailed for four and a half years last year after he was convicted by another Central Criminal Court jury of 11 counts of indecent assault against two daughers between January 1971 and December 1973, and later in 1980.
Both girls were aged between 11 and 13 years old at the time.
Garda Donal Corcoran told the court that this vicim, now 56 and the man's niece, later told gardaí she was 11 when she was first raped by him.
On another occasion, after she had been molested, he told her that if she "remained silent it would not happen to any of the others".
The girl took it that the man was referring to her own siblings.
A victim impact report stated that the offences still have "a massive impact" on the woman, who said she felt her "childhood had been taken".
Ms Justice Heneghan noted that the accused had never shown any remorse for his actions.
