Concern over EPA report on Chemifloc Spill

Deep concerns have been expressed after a report in the Chemifloc spillage last December found the company stored materials incorrectly and it wasn’t fully compliant with the conditions of its licence.

Eight people were hospitalised following the incident at the plant in the Smithstown Industrial Estate on December 20th, and six of them hadn’t return to work for weeks after the spill.

The report carried out by the Environmental Protection Agency found that the chlorine gas emissions had extended beyond the site boundary of Chemifloc , affecting nearby businesses.

It also criticised the labelling system in place on some of the acids, which the EPA found were stored within the same bund as sodium chlorite and sodium hydroxide.

A copy of the report was presented to Shannon Councillors this week but Independent representative Patricia McCarthy is concerned about enforcement of its recommendations
