Concern As 1,500 Hospital Bed Days Lost At UHL This Year

Concern is being expressed at delayed discharges at the region’s main hospital, which have led to almost 1,500 hospital bed days lost so far this year.

The figures released to Fianna Fáil show that because of a lack of interim care facility, those fit to move out of wards but not out of care are taking up bed days that are required by those more gravely ill.

Meelick councillor Cathal Crowe says this, combined with the daily overcrowding issue at University Hospital Limerick, is creating an unsustainable situation.

Councillor Crowe, who is a Fianna Fáil General Election candidate in Clare next time out, says a discharge facility is badly needed.
