Sea Captain Sinéan Reen, who lives in Crosshaven, Co. Cork but is originally from Clare and attended secondary school in Shannon, was the first woman to qualify as a deck officer in Ireland.
She's now been elected president of the Irish Institute of Master Mariners, and says she is looking to address a number of issues, including substandard seas, pollution issues and piracy.
