Clare Vice-President Of INTO Urges Government To Push Ahead With Pay Equilisation

The Vice-President of teachers’ union the INTO is urging the Government to push ahead with pay equalisation in an effort to prevent a further mass exodus of newly qualified teachers.

Corofin native Joe Killeen is commenting in light of a new survey, which has found that one in three primary schools are unable to fill teacher absences, with some vacancies filled by people who aren’t qualified.

The Catholic Primary School Management Association says the gaps are mainly caused by young teachers who’re moving to the Middle East, so they can afford a house here at home.

The findings contradict a recent claim by Education Minister Richard Bruton that there was no evidence of a staff shortage.
