Clare VFI Chair Says Proposed Licencing Laws Could Lead To Mass Exodus From Pub Sector

The Clare Chair of the VFI is warning that if new licencing laws are passed that it will lead to a mass exodus of publicans from the sector.

The Oireachtas Justice Committee met yesterday to begin pre-legislative scrutiny of the Sale Of Alcohol Bill 2022 which aims to bring Ireland’s more than 100 licencing laws together into ‘one modern piece of legislation’.

Among the changes put forward in the bill are the extension of opening hours for pubs and nightclubs and the opening up of the licencing market.

Ennis publican Charlie O’Meara, says if the extinguishment provision is removed, it will lead to a decrease in pubs rather than an increase as intended by government.
