Clare’s Sinn Féin TD is calling for the urgent end to the neglect of women living with endometriosis.
The medical condition, which results in tissue similar to the lining of the uterus growing outside of the organ, affects at least one in ten women in Ireland, with recent global research suggesting that nearly one in six women may have symptoms indicative of endometriosis.
It’s being discussed for the first time in the lower house of the Oireachtas today, with Sinn Féin putting forward a Dáil motion seeking to improve access to care for thousands of women affected across the state.
The party’s Shannon-based representative, Deputy Donna McGettigan says women have had to battle not only living with chronic, excruciating pain, but also enduring the trauma of having to fight for a diagnosis. She insists it’s simply not good enough.
