Clare Students Call For Answers On Leaving Cert

It’s claimed students in Clare are stressed, overwhelmed and tired of uncertainty surrounding the Leaving Cert.

Another meeting is taking place between the Department of Education and stakeholders today to consider whether state exams should proceed this year and if so, how.

Students are calling for answers without delay, but that’s unlkely to come today or even tomorrow.

A number of Ministers are meeting today to discuss the re-opening of schools and the future of the State Exams in the summer.

The Cabinet sub-Committee on Education are considering plans for a phased return for students, particularly those with additional educational needs.

The Education Minister is facing increasing calls from students to give clarity on the Leaving and Junior Cert, with just over four months to go until the first exam is due to begin.

The TUI have issued a statement saying, they don’t believe any system of preductive grades would reduce stress in the school community.

While President of the ASTI, Ann Piggot she says teachers would prefer written exams with a lot of choice for students.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has also expressed his desire for some form of written exam, though a recent survey of 20,000 second level students found only 4% were prefer that method over predictive grades, with 81% calling for a choice for students.

Leaving Cert Student at Ghaelcholáiste an Chláir, Cian Costello says students will be angry, if cabinet ministers don’t take their view on board in making a decision.

However, no decision is likely to come until at least later in the week.

Labour’s Education Spokesman Aodhan O Riordain says students need certainty as soon as possible.
