A Clare priest says the simple nature of Pope Francis’ funeral and burial is a reflection of the humility he showed during his time as the head of the church.
Over 200,000 people are expected to attend the outdoor funeral service at St.Peter’s Square tomorrow morning.
His Holiness’ funeral will be celebrated at 9am Irish time with over 100,000 people having paid their respects since Wednesday following his death on Easter Monday aged 88.
President Michael D.Higgins, Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tanáiste Simon Harris will all be in attendance alongside other world leaders including US President Donald Trump.
He will be buried in the grounds of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome’s Esquilino neighbourhood, breaking with the tradition of being laid to rest in the grotto of St.Peter’s Basilica.
Killaloe Diocese’s Communications Officer, Fr Brendan Quinlivan, says even the coffin he will be buried in emphasises his humble nature.
