Clare Judge Criticises Speed Van Prosecution Rate

A Clare judge has re-iterated his criticism of the number of failed prosecutions relating to the Go Safe Speed Vans, saying his latest decision to dismiss such cases is ’embarrassing’ and a ‘charade’.

Judge Patrick Durcan made his remarks as he dismissed all of the Go Safe speeding cases at a sitting of Killaloe District Court, after hearing that a number of motorists didn’t receive the Fixed Charge Penalty Notices.

The judge said the notices should be served by registered post, and added that he would prefer that the cases were not listed before him.

At Ennis District Court last month, Judge Durcan dismissed nine GoSafe cases, and Clare County Council has now backed his call for the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee to examine the costs related to the speed vans.
