Clare Independent TD Calling On Government To Enforce Collection Of Vacant Sites Levy

A Clare Independent TD is calling on the government to enforce the collection of the vacant sites levy.

The levy was introduced in 2018 to encourage housing developement on lands greater than 0.05 hectares which are deemed suitable for residential use.

Such lands left idle for a period of 12 months or longer are to be recorded on the Local Authority’s vacant sites register, where owners are liable to be taxed 7% of the residential market value .

Clare County Council is among 12 local authorities which have failed to collect any money due under the levy, since its inception & Kilrush based deputy, Violet Anne Wynne believes an opportunity to tackle the housing crisis has been missed.
