Clare Haven says it is “chilling” that a large number of people’s first instinct is to disbelieve someone making a sexual assault allegation.
It follows research from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, which found that almost half of men under 25 believe there are “a lot” of false rape allegations.
Its annual report also found that 15% of adults believe a person who is raped while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is at least partially responsible.
Dr Siobhán O’Connor, Director of Services at Clare Haven, says the way victims are treated in Ireland makes it difficult for people to come forward with false allegations.
